This weekend we were in Chester. An event held at a club
where they had sold tickets for our performance.
My first job on my usual Monday Morning prior to the gig, I
check the contract and all details of the booking. I’ll then call the
Entertainments Manager or Client if I have any questions or need to
double-check anything.
On the gig day itself, our day starts from loading the van
at home, then travelling to the gig, unloading, setting up, sound-checking,
then the actual performance, the load-up afterwards and then the drive home.
We had a rehearsal scheduled for the Thursday eve prior to
the gig. Although we don’t need to rehearse as such, we have a refresh of material
– as we have 3 bands it’s important to keep on top of the material as there is
so much of it.
It’s very hard to get one evening that suits all 5 of us,
but Thursday evening are usually good for everyone. Unfortunately, Thursday
lunchtime our keyboard player texts to say his brother has been rushed to
hospital he is unable to attend the rehearsal.
This posed us with a few concerns – lack of rehearsal plus
the possibility of his brother still being ill on the day of the show. I had to
think and prepare for worst case scenario – cancelling the gig or using keyboard
click track to fulfil the contract. I spoke with the band and we decided to use
click-track if it was the only way we could fulfil the booking, as they had
sold so many tickets it would be impossible to replace us at such short notice.
Luckily, the keyboard player’s brother was much better the
following day so the show went ahead 100% live and the tracks weren’t needed. It
may have been unnecessary worry, but we were prepared and had a plan B just in
case.
